WHAT IS DATA PROTECTION?

The importance of data has been well-known throughout history, control of data has kept rulers in power, won wars, and built and destroyed kingdoms. Persons who control data shape society. Data Protection is not a new concept but it has become of increasing importance as companies digitize and are able to process and store large amounts of data.

This large amount of data is housed in government agencies, banks, businesses, private institutions, hospitals, schools, and colleges. Data Protection involves the process of collection, storing, and dissemination of personal data using technology, it involves the public perception and expectation of privacy and the political and legal underpinnings surrounding that data.

WHAT IS THE DATA PROTECTION ACT?

The Data Protection Act came into force in 2020. It defines the general principles for the treatment of personal data relating to an individual.  We are now in the second year of a two-year period during which companies and other entities that process data are required to carry out the training and set up the systems and procedures required to comply with the Act.

The Data Protection Act falls under the Ministry of Science, Energy, and Technology and is Administered by the Data Commissioner who has sole powers to investigate data breaches impose fines, and ensure that breaches are rectified. The Data Protection Act sets the standards for the processing of data including its collection, recording, storage, and dissemination, it also outlines the rules and regulations related to data privacy and the penalties for data breaches.

WHAT IS THE DATA PROTECTION INSTITUTE

The Data Protection Institute (DPI) is an organization that provides comprehensive training and consultancy services in various aspects of data protection. It offers education and expertise to individuals, businesses, agencies, and institutions, with the aim of laying the foundation for implementing policies, systems, and procedures necessary for compliance with data protection regulations, such as the Data Protection Act.

FOUNDERS

The Data Protection Institute was founded by Chukwuemeka Cameron, Attorney at Law, Dr. Blossom O’Meally-Nelson, Management Consultant, and Adrienne (Terry) Stokes, Legal Training Consultant.

They brought together their expertise in law, management consulting, and legal training to create an organization dedicated to promoting and protecting data privacy rights. Their leadership and commitment to individual data privacy continue to shape the Institute’s mission and vision.
